The NTK AFR722-EE20 is the pre-catalytic converter air fuel ratio (AFR) sensor for the Nissan 350Z DE (VQ35DE) built from November 2004. It is a 5-wire wideband AFR sensor with a 620mm cable, supplied with a direct-fit factory-matched connector for plug and play installation. NTK is the world's largest manufacturer of original equipment oxygen sensors. This is a wideband air fuel ratio sensor and is not interchangeable with a conventional narrowband oxygen sensor.
From November 2004 the VQ35DE moved to a wideband air fuel ratio sensor in the upstream pre-cat position. Unlike a conventional narrowband oxygen sensor which simply switches rich or lean, the wideband AFR sensor produces a continuous linear output signal that tells the ECU precisely how rich or lean the engine is running at any point in time. This allows the ECU to make finer and faster corrections to the air fuel mixture for improved fuel economy, reduced emissions, and sharper throttle response. A faulty AFR sensor has a direct and immediate effect on fuel management and drivability.
Common symptoms of a faulty upstream AFR sensor:
• Check engine light with upstream O2 or AFR fault codes (P0130, P0131, P0132, P0133, P2A00, P2A03 or similar)
• Increased fuel consumption
• Rough idle or hesitation under acceleration
• Reduced engine performance or sluggish throttle response
• Failed emissions test
• Note: a faulty AFR sensor can also falsely trigger catalytic converter efficiency codes (P0420 / P0430)
